PCARRD confers awards to outstanding individuals,
institutions
LOS BAÑOS, Laguna-The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry
and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) recently gave recognition
to outstanding individuals, institutions during its 25th anniversary celebration.
PCARRD conferred the Pantas Award to Dr. Silvestre C. Andales to Dr.
Silvestre C. Andales, as outstanding research administrator, and Dr. Ernesto
Lozada, as outstanding scientist.
Currently the executive director of the Bureau of Postharvest Research
and Extension (formerly NAPHIRE0, Andales was recognized for his outstanding
leadershipp and contribution to the development of the country’s postharvest
sector.
Lozada, dean and professor of the University of the Philippines Los
Baños-College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology (UPLB-CEAT),
was recognized for his persistence to improve the farmer’s lives through
his significant researches on postharvest processing of agricultural crops.
The Tanglaw award was given to the institute of Plant Breeding (IPB)
of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) for its contribution
in strengthening plant breeding researches that led to the development
of new and improved crop varieties to support and sustain the country’s
intensified, and diversified agriculture. IPB has bred much improved varieties
of crops such as the "Sinta" hybrid papaya, the single cross
IPB 911 corn hybrid, and other three-way cross corn hybrids.(S &
