New breeding lines for IRRI

LOS BAÑOS,Laguna- Seven countries on three continents and in the Pacific Islands have named and released 10 breeding lines from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) as new national rice varieties whose wide diversity of characteristics makes them suitable for the varied ecosystems in which they will grow.
The countries are Burkina Faso and Senegal in Africa, Brazil, in Latin America, Papua New Guinea in the Pacific, and Myanmar, Nepal, and Vietnam in Asia. The rices are the result of crossing and evaluating breeding lines at IRRI to produce rice plants with characteristics that meet the specific needs of rice farmers in a variety of climatic and other ecoregional conditions.

In Africa, the major characteristics of the new Burkina Faso variety, FKR42, are high yield and good grain quality while Senegal’s new rice, Sahel 108, was selected for its early maturing capability. In Latin America, Brazil’s new Dimante BR will produce higher yields.
In the mountainous Pacific Island country of Papua New Guinea, ER12 was chosen because it is suitable for upland rice cultivation. In Nepal, Radha 4 is ideal dut to its tolerance of iron toxicity, while Myanmar selected Aye Wan for its ability to mature early.
Vietnam named and released four varieties :MTL 1377 and OMCS94 for multiple resistance to local pests and diseases; MTL114 for specific resistance to brown planthopper; and MTL139 for its shorter growing season.
