Before the Spanish era came, there were four large barrios bounded by Mt. Makiling that comprised Sampalok. The first batch of Spanish troops came to the upland village of San Pablo, then named Sampaloc. Due to their efforts in the spread of Christianity in the Philippines, Sampaloc was declared as a parish in 1586, after 61 years it became a municipality under the name “San Pablo de los Montes” in honor of St. Paul, The First Hermit. In 1756, San Pablo de los Montes was in the jurisdiction of Batangas Province and in 1883 it was returned to Laguna. In 1899, the municipality established a government to lead the throng. With accordance to the Commonwealth Act No. 520 or City Charter of San Pablo sponsored by Rep. Tomas Dizon, San Pablo was declared a city.
